| Shiatsu
Barefoot Shiatsu
is a series of stretches and pressure applied by feet and hands.
I have seen it be beneficial for loosening and strengthening the
whole body. It also stimulates the chi in Acupressure meridians
(path ways). I studied Barefoot Shiatsu also at the Acupressure
Institute in Berkeley. In fact it was Shiatsu, which interested
me first.
- A friend of mine had been born with severe
Asthma. Her doctor and her mother had told her throughout her
childhood, she would not live to be 20 years old, because of
her bad asthma. When she told me the following story, she was
about 27 years old. A couple of years before that, her health
had worsened and she had been diagnosed with emphysema also.
Several doctors had told her partner, there was nothing they
could do for her and it looked like my friend wasn't going to
live much longer. Then her partner took her to a Chinese man,
a Shiatsu practitioner. He had her lay down on a mat
and did Shiatsu on her. She had not been able to breath in or
out much and after the first treatment she already was able
to breath again. What a relief! They went to him for a series
of treatments. My friend is no longer diagnosed with Emphysema.
As of today, she still has Asthma, but she is still alive (now
44 years old).
- While I haven't experienced a success as drastic
as the one above myself, I often use some parts of a barefoot
shiatsu treatment in my massages. If a person has tightness
in the middle back, it often relaxes quite quickly with shiatsu.
To do a complete barefoot shiatsu treatment the person has to
lay on a futon or a mat instead of a massage table.
